​What's ISE

Trinity's Integrated Skills in English (ISE) is a contemporary four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) qualification which can be taken in registered exam centres either as ISE Digital or ISE (paper edition). It is recognised by governments and institutions as providing reliable evidence of English language proficiency.

Preparing for ISE helps develop authentic communicative and transferable skills that are required for academic study and employability, such as synthesising information, participating in interactive discussions and presenting on topics of personal interest.

Mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR)

ISE proficiency levels are calibrated to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR) and are available at all six CEFR levels: A1–C2.

Trinity's ISE A2–C2 exams have been awarded the ALTE Q-mark by the Association of Language Testers in Europe demonstrating that they meet strictest of quality criteria.

​ISE Specifications

Trinity’s Integrated Skills in English (ISE) exams are designed for candidates who are not native speakers of English and who wish to achieve a high quality, internationally recognised qualification in English that is available and recognised worldwide.

ISE assesses all four language skills - speaking, listening, reading and writing and has been designed to correspond to the descriptions of language proficiency in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) developed by the Council of Europe (Language Policy Division). The exam is primarily set in the educational domain within the learning training context where the aim is to acquire specific knowledge and skills (CEFR - Council of Europe, 2001, page 15).

The intended candidates are young people or adults, typically at school or college, who are using English as a second or foreign language as part of their studies to gain access to further education contexts like diplomas, degrees or qualifications that are relevant to their professional development.

The ISE exams are regulated by Ofqual (the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) in England, CCEA Regulation in Northern Ireland and by Qualifications Wales as International ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) qualifications

UCAS 

Guidance from the UK's University and Colleges Admissions Services (UCAS) advises international student applicants to check the language level requirements of individual universities before making applications.

UCAS does not specify acceptable levels of English language proficiency. However, typical requirements for university degree programmes in the UK are:

  • ISE II (CEFR B2) - RQF Level 1/ EQF Level 2
  • ISE III (CEFR C1) - RQF Level 2/ EQF Level 3
  • ISE IV (CEFR C2) - RQF Level 3/ EQF Level 4

International framework alignment

Qualifications formally calibrated to the CEFR

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It is used around the world to describe learners' language skills. Trinity's ISE and GESE qualifications have been formally calibrated to the CEFR.

RQF and EQF frameworks

All of Trinity's regulated qualifications meet the requirements of the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).

​Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What Skills Does ISE Digital test?

ISE Digital assesses all four language skills: Speaking, listening, reading, and writing. ISE assesses the ability to interact in English in an authentic and meaningful way, through integrated reading and writing exam tasks and integrated speaking and listening tasks. 

2. How long is the exam?

The 4-skills exam takes up to 105 minutes, including a levelling test and time to read instructions. 

3. Can the modules be taken separately?

No, all four modules must be taken at the same time. You may resit one module within 90 days to improve your score.

4. Can a module be retaken?

It is possible to re-take one skill within 90 days to improve a score.

5. Which spelling conventions are accepted?

Candidates can choose between American English and British English spelling conventions. Regardless of which convention they choose, they must use it consistently.

6. What role does a candidate's accent play

Candidates are assessed on how intelligible they are. They do not need to copy any particular accent of first-language English speakers.

7. What is the testing score format?

The score for each module is reported on a scale from zero to 150. 

The ISE digital overall score is an average of the candidates’ four module scores and is reported on a scale from zero to 150. 

These scores will be added to the certificate as well as the corresponding CEFR level from A1–C2. 

A 'Not yet A1' score is also possible.

8. What information is shown on the certificate?

9. What information is included in the diagnostic and score report?

The diagnostic profile of your performance in each skill (reading, listening, speaking and writing) shows the areas where you performed well and the areas you might wish to practice and develop further. The score report includes module scores. 

10. What levels of CEFR are assessed?

ISE Digital will assess candidates from CEFR levels A1–C2. 

A 'Not yet A1' score is also possible. 

11. Is the exam regulated by Ofqual?

Yes, the Integrated Skills in English (ISE) exam is regulated by Ofqual. 

12. How do I book a ISE Digital exam?

ISE Digital exams must be booked through our Registered Exam Centre (Europolytech AcademyRua. Camilo Castelo Branco 79, 4425-037 Águas Santas, Porto, Portugal.

13. Are there certificates for each modules?

There are no separate module certificates.

14. Is EuroPolytech Academy an official Trinity College London centre?

Yes. EuroPolytech Academy is an authorised centre of Trinity College London (Registration number 75859), which allows us to both prepare candidates and facilitate access to official Trinity examinations in accordance with Trinity’s regulations. Our Trinity accreditation number

15. Are you a teaching centre or an exam centre?

We are both. EuroPolytech delivers structured English training and also supports candidates in accessing official Trinity examinations. This means students can complete their full journey, from learning to certification, within one institution.

16. Do you issue the Trinity certificates?

No. All certificates are issued directly by Trinity College London and sent to Europolytech Academy, which then hands them out to learners.

EuroPolytech’s role is to:

  • prepare students academically
  • register candidates
  • facilitate the examination process

The final assessment and certification remain entirely under Trinity’s authority.

17. Is the certification recognised internationally?

Yes. Trinity College London is an internationally recognised awarding body, and its English qualifications are aligned with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). However, candidates should always verify specific requirements with the institution, employer, or authority they are applying to.

18. Do I need to study at EuroPolytech to take the Trinity exam?

Not necessarily. Candidates may register for the exam without taking a full preparation course. However, we strongly recommend preparation, as Trinity ISE assesses integrated language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in a structured format.

19. What is the difference between English training and Trinity ISE certification?

  • English training: Delivered by EuroPolytech, focused on improving your language skills
  • ISE certification: An official qualification awarded by Trinity after successful assessment

Our programmes are designed to connect both elements into a clear progression pathway.

20. Can I enrol only for English classes without taking the exam?

Yes. You may enrol in English training independently.

However, our programmes are structured to prepare students for certification, and most learners choose to progress towards a Trinity qualification.

21. Can I take the exam without preparation?

Yes, but it is not recommended unless you are already familiar with the exam format and confident across all four skills.

Preparation significantly improves performance, particularly for:

  • integrated reading–writing tasks
  • structured speaking components

All assessments are conducted by EuroPolytech Academy under the authority of Trinity College London, using approved examiners and procedures.

EuroPolytech does not control grading decisions.

24. How are candidates assessed?

Trinity ISE evaluates:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Listening

The assessment focuses on real-life communication and integrated language use, not isolated grammar testing.

25. Why choose a centre that offers both preparation and examination?

Because it creates a coherent learning pathway:

  • No disconnect between teaching and assessment
  • Better understanding of exam expectations
  • More efficient progression from learning to certification

This integrated model reduces uncertainty and improves outcomes.

26. Is EuroPolytech a university or a language school?

EuroPolytech is an education provider offering BritishVocational Programmes and Professional Training, including English language pathways leading to British recognised certification.

27. Does this certification allow me to study or work abroad?

Trinity ISE can support applications for study and employment, depending on the requirements of the receiving institution or authority.

Candidates must always confirm acceptance criteria with the relevant organisation.
